Why use shipping containers?

During the early years of the Roman Empire, Vitruvius wrote a textbook on architecture that specified three features that buildings should have:

  • Firmitas (firmness, strength, stability)
  • Utilitas (utility, correctness to purpose)
  • Venustas (beauty)

By nature shiping containers are very successful in meeting the first two criteria.

After all they are:

  • made ro be stackable
  • made to last, withstanding multiple shipments across oceans and continents
  • made to be practical as C-Bourne Structures designs and manufactures each custom module to your aesthetic, from inception

Who started the Shipping Container Revolution

In 1956 a man named Malcom McLean changed the world by inventing the first shipping container concept, which not only brought the cost of loading and unloading down 90% but also speeded the loading process of a ship, from days down to a few hours.

Containers Specifications

There is an official standard container size called ISO which has the same specifications world wide. Sizes are

Length 20' or 40'   Typical Width 8'   Heights 8'6" and High Cube (HQ) is 9'6" high

Building Techniques

All units are designed using modular light construction methods consisting of floor, roof frame, and corner profiles constructed with far greater strength and durability that can withstand the rigors of numerous transport handlings, including exterior barge transport. Competition: heavy wood construction and residential home pink fibreglass insulation, requires eight inch thick walls to obtain the minimum required strength and R-value for trailers/module. This adds heaviness, makes it necessary for competitors units to be built on heavy steel skids which complicates lifting.

Compounding of individual containers in longitudinal, transverse, and vertical directions stacked up to 3 high without limits. Since these units are ISO rated for 680,000 lbs, we can increase creative socially relevant community living design options, making them very competitive and desirable in the marketplace. Competition: Their product incorporates outdated 1960’s-type construction techniques which require major structural upgrades to stack product 2 or 3 high which makes price and delivery time increase. This leaves their typical accommodation sites with a bulky footprint which requires a larger land lease thus increase in land costs.

Interiors come standard with sound proof walls made of light insulation panels and allow for pleasant interior conditions. The superior physical properties of our wall construction are factory direct. Competition: interior walls are not sound proof if that is required it is extra.

The flooring is PVC faux look alike hard wood flooring which is virtually indestructible.
